The Relationship of Child Care to Economic Development
Paul Borek introduced the topic as "taking a look at quality child care and its linkage to economic development." Three local professionals familiar with the subject and in particular its application to DeKalb County then gave the audience an excellent overview of the issue.
Micki Chulick, Executive Director of 4-C (Community Coordinated Child Care) led off with a profile of the child care industry in DeKalb County; then reviewed the economic impact of child care; touched on supply and demand of services and wrapped up by sharing research on the impact of quality child care on an individual's life.
Pam Wicking, Program Director of 4-C followed with a look at the programs 4-C offers, including subsidies and classes; she cited research that talked about the relationship between quality child care and work force preparation; and concluded with a look at the relationship between worker productivity, attendance and satisfaction and child care.
Dan Templin, Executive Director of the DeKalb County Community Foundation was the final speaker and he reviewed the Communityworks Partnership; the Quality Rating System for child care facilities; and options for grants to child care programs.
A PowerPoint that illustrates many of the points they raised
is available in the Members Only section of the
