Fiber Optics: The New Telecommunications Option

New technology was the topic of a Business Roundtable Meeting held at Kishwaukee Community College. The event, entitled "FIBER OPTICS: THE new telecommunications option," focused on new developments in fiber optic connections for DeKalb County and surrounding areas. The first presentation was given by Wally Czerniak and Herb Kuryliw of Northern Illinois University. Mr. Czerniak summarized the goals and benefits of NIU Net—a fiber optic network connected to a host of municipalities. Mr. Kuryliw gave updates on the NIU Net and gave examples of how the network is being used. Next, Cohen Barnes and Dan Haverson of DeKalb Fiber Optics reported on the technological aspects of fiber optic networking. They described the advantages and capabilities of fiber optics and stressed the importance of the availability of this service for new and current businesses. Jeff Hauman of AutoMeter was the final presenter and gave testimonial of how fiber optics was the most cost effective way to meet the needs for a reliable high speed network.
